MCGILLIVRAY NAMED FALMOUTH ROAD RACE DIRECTOR

(25-Oct) -- Next August, Dave McGillivray will be a busy man.

McGillivray, who already directs the TD Bank Beach to Beacon 10-K in Cape Elizabeth, Me., through his company DMSE Sports the first weekend of August, will now also direct the New Balance Falmouth Road Race the following weekend on Cape Cod.  The two races, amongst the most popular in New England, recorded nearly 17,000 finishers on a combined basis last August.

Falmouth, which will celebrate its 40th running this year, had been searching for a new race director after their four-person race directing team --Rich and Kathy Sherman, and John and Lucia Carroll-- left the event last March (the Shermans resigned and the Carrolls retired, the Cape Cod Times reported).  Matt Auger, the event's office manager, worked as the acting race director for the 2011 edition which was held on Aug. 14.  Falmouth's board of directors saw McGillivray as the best choice.

"After a national search, the Board of Directors unanimously voted to have Dave McGillivray direct the New Balance Falmouth Road Race for the 40th running in 2012, and help grow and build the race into the future," said Christine Frazier, board president, through a statement.  "Dave McGillivray has been named Road Race Management's Race Director of the Year, directs the B.A.A. Boston Marathon as well as hundreds of other events, has run Falmouth many times, and lives right here in Massachusetts. The board feels that Dave's vast expertise, personal love of running and passion for raising funds for local charities is exactly the right combination and a perfect fit for the New Balance Falmouth Road Race and the Falmouth community."

McGillivray, who is also an avid runner, was clearly pleased to be taking on the leadership role at Falmouth.

"As a caretaker of this iconic, world-class event --it was here before me and will be here long after I am gone-- my methodology is that of a team approach: surrounding myself with good, knowledgeable people, so I am more the 'conductor' than a director, and the dedicated team is the orchestra."

The Beach to Beacon and Falmouth races had already cooperated informally on elite athletes.  This year, the Beach to Beacon's elite athletes coordinator Larry Barthlow organized temporary housing in Maine for several athletes who ran his event who would then be headed south to Falmouth.

The 40th Falmouth Road Race will be held on Sunday, August 12.  The 7-mile, coastal course stretches from Woods Hole to Falmouth Heights.  Race information is available at www.falmouthroadrace.com, and you can see a list of all of the event's winners at http://www.arrs.net/HP_Falm7.htm.
